Hi! I am Gaddam Balaiah, a Pochampally Ikat fabrics weaver. I was born on March 16, 1964, in Koyyalagudem village of Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana. I have seen my father and grandfather weaving Ikat fabrics since my childhood. At the age of 30, I joined Koyyalagudem Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society to learn more in this field. Then step-by-step I started the weaving and sale of Ikat fabrics. Now I have been weaving Ikat fabrics for 25 years. I am an Indian Handloom Brand (IHB) holder from 2016.
Pochampally Ikat is a tie and dye weaving technique. The yarns are tied together and then dyed. When the dyeing ends, all the binding is removed and the yarns are woven into a fabric. Woven cotton fabric is made purely on a handloom. The specialty of the Ikat fabric is blurry design.
I have participated in several exhibitions such as Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad, Dilli Haat and India International Trade Fair (Pragati Maidan) in New Delhi. I have also participated in exhibitions organized by the Development Commissioner (Handloom) in Guwahati, Mumbai, and Bangalore.
