Personal Details
Hi! I am Makwana Bhikhabhai Bhalabhai, an artisan of Double Ikat Patola Silk Saree. My father’s name is Late Shri Bhalabhai; he was also a Patola silk saree artisan.
Crafting Skills
I belong to the Vankar community of Kutch, my ancestors used to weave patola sarees. I learned to weave patola silk saree from my father. My uncles Mr. Dalpat Bhai Devshi Bhai Makwana and Mr. Heera Bhai have received the ‘Rashtrapati Award’ for weaving double ikat patola silk sarees.
Craft Process
I make double ikat patola sarees using banglori silk. I use indigo dye and naphthol colors for colouring.
Specialization
I can weave many designs, and my expertise is in making elephant designs.
Experience
I have 22 years of experience in this field.
Participation in Exhibitions
I have showcased sarees in an exhibition held in Bangalore which was organized by NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology). I have also participated in exhibitions organized by Garvi Gurjari Emporium in Karnataka and Kolkata.
Training Programmes Conducted
I also teach students the process of making patola sarees. So far I have trained 20–22 students.
Future Plans
I want to sell my products not only in India but also in foreign lands. I want my Vankar community to do more work, create new designs and make all efforts so that people around the world can learn more about our art and culture.
