Natural Grass Mats & Other Products Made by an Artisan from Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal
Hi! I am a Grass Craft artisan/manufacturer. I was born in a village in Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal. My father was also a Grass Craft artisan. Currently, I make natural grass mats, caps, coasters, curtains, file folders, magazine holders, pouches, table mats, etc.
My wife also helps me in making the grass products.
Grass Craft Skills
All my family members are Grass Craft artisans/weavers. My ancestors also used to do this work for their living. I learned Grass Craft from my father at a very young age.
Grass Craft Process
I use natural grass in this craft. We cultivate grass and use it for craftwork. This grass is called “Madurkathi” in Bengali. I make mats using jute, cotton, and grass on a small loom.
There are no side effects in using Grass Craft products as they are completely chemical-free. In addition, these products are foldable and can be accommodated in small spaces.
I have expertise in making natural grass mats, and I make a lot of variety of it.
I have over 35 years of experience in Grass Craft.
Participation in Exhibitions
I have participated in exhibitions organized at India International Trade Fair (New Delhi), Crafts Museum (New Delhi), World Trade Center (Mumbai), Kala Ghoda Art Festival (Mumbai), etc.
Apart from these, I have displayed my products in many cities like Pune, Chennai, Karnal, Bhubaneshwar, Siliguri, Kolkata, Bengaluru, etc. I even went to Scotland in 2002 to showcase my products.
I was awarded the “State Award” by the Government of West Bengal in 2004.
Training Programmes Conducted
I have trained students in different cities like Hoshangabad and Betul in Madhya Pradesh, Raiganj in West Bengal, and Bhubaneswar in Orissa.
In the future, I want to sell my products globally. For this, I am now listing them on the online platforms as well.
