Miniature Painting by Artisan Gopal Prasad Sharma from Rajasthan, India (National Awardee)
Hi! I am Artist Gopal Prasad Sharma from Jaipur, Rajasthan. I was born on 16th June 1964 in Bijoliya village in Bhilwara district of Rajasthan. I have worked in almost every style of art like Mughal Shaili, Rajasthani Rajput Shaili, Kishangarh Shaili, Mewar Shaili, Devgarh Shaili, Kota-Bundi Shaili, Jaipur Shaili, Kangra Shaili, Rajasthan Phad Shaili, etc. Miniature painting is our ancestral art and I have learned it from my father. Natural stone color, pure gold and silver, and ranga colors are used to make these paintings.
In the beginning, I used to do miniature painting as a hobby but later in 1980, I made this art my career. Now I have 40 years of experience in miniature painting. I have been honored by the State Government and the Central Government several times for this art. My first award was Jaipur District Award in 1994. In 1998, I received the Maharana Sajjan Singh Award from the Mewar Foundation, Udaipur. In 1998 again I got the Rajasthan State Award. In the year 2000, I received the National Merit Award and got the Gaur Ratna Award. In 2001, my name was entered in the Limca Book of Records for making 1 mm miniature painting on the mustard seed. Then in 2007, I was awarded the National Award by the Government of India. In 2010, I won the Kala Mani Award, Best Citizen of India and Bharat Ke Kohinoor Award. In 2014, I won the Paramparagat International Award among 1170 national award winners from 40 countries at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela. In 2017, I got Rajasthan State Silver Medal Award and Bajaj Auto Ltd. Fellowship for Miniature Art from the Prafulla Dahanukar Art Foundation, Mumbai in Tagore Theater, Chandigarh. Five times I was nominated for the Padma Shri Award by the Government of Rajasthan and the Government of Haryana.
I have participated in many exhibitions held in India and abroad.
In India, I have exhibited my work in India Expo Mart, India Art Festival, Nehru Centre, India International Trade Fair, Kala Mela organised by Rajasthan Lalit Kala Academy, Master Creation Program at Dilli Haat, Surajkund International Crafts Mela, India Habitat Centre, Surat Fair, Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan, Goa Festival etc.
I have represented India in fairs organized in Germany, Brazil, England, etc. Among the participants of 60 countries, I got the first award in the Tendence International Trade Fair held in Frankfurt, Germany.
I have worked as a member of the Governing Council of Rajasthan School of Arts from 2007 to 2010. I have taught more than 20000 students worldwide. Many students are doing Ph.D. in the subject “Legendary Artist Gopal Prasad Sharma” from Mewar University, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan. I want more and more students to come forward and learn this art.
