Hi! I am Shanti Devi, a Madhubani painting artist. I was born on 31 December 1957 in Jitwarpur village of Madhubani district in Bihar.
How I Learned the Craft
At the age of 8, I received the patronage of Smt. Sita Devi, who was awarded the Padma Shri in the field of Madhubani art. Sita Devi Ji was the pioneer of the new era of Mithila painting. Soon I became one of her most talented students. She gave me love and care as a teacher.
At that time, Maharashtra artist Shri Bhaskar Kulkarni was being praised for the widespread promotion of Mithila painting. After seeing my work, he appreciated me and bought one of my paintings for 25 paise. It was my first earning in life and was a huge inspiration.
At the age of 18, I was married to Shri Vidyanand Jha of Givahi village, Bihar. My husband was a farmer. After marriage, with the support of my family, whenever I had the opportunity, I attended workshops and exhibitions.
How I Make the Craft
I make paintings on handmade paper and other objects with the help of nib pens and brushes. I use natural and fabric colors in my paintings.
I can make paintings in all styles, but I specialize in the Bharni and Kachni styles of Madhubani painting.
Participation in Exhibitions
I have participated in Mithila Chitrakala Mahotsav organized by Upendra Maharathi Shilp Anusandhan Sansthan (Dept. of Industries, Government of Bihar), Export Council of India Exhibition in Italy, Master Creation Exhibition at Dilli Haat and Surajkund International Crafts Mela.
I was awarded the State Award in the year 2008-09 and the National Merit Award in the year 2012.
Training Programmes Conducted
During various training programs, I contributed greatly to teaching the younger generation of learners under the Guru Shishya Parampara of DC Handicrafts (4-months Program).
My future plan is to train more people in the field of Madhubani art.
