Carpets and Dhurries by Weaver Mohammad Yasir from Uttar Pradesh, India (National Awardee)
Hi! I am Mohammad Yasir Kamal Ansari, a Handloom Carpet and Dhurrie weaver. I was born on August 10, 1976, in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. Carpet and Dhurrie weaving is our ancestral art and I have learned it from my elder brother. I was awarded the National Award in the year 2005.
Carpets and dhurries are made on the loom using cotton and wool. I specialize in both handloom and pit loom dhurries. Since cotton and wool mix carpets and dhurries can be used only in winter, I have also started making jute carpets. These carpets are also preferred by many people and now I am making more designs in them.
I have exhibited my products in many exhibitions in India and abroad. In India, I participated in the Master Creation Program in Dilli Haat in 2014. In the year 2018, I participated in Surajkund International Crafts Mela, Faridabad. I have also exhibited my products in the Crafts Council of India in Chennai and Coimbatore. Through the Development Commissioner (Handloom), I went to showcase my products in exhibitions in Germany and Japan. There I got a very good response from the customers and all of my products were sold.
In 2008, I taught dhurrie weaving to many people in a training program called Shilp Guru Parampara.
